The Zhargylchak State Sanctuary was established in 1990 and covers an area of more than 23,000 hectares. It is home to the Tien Shan brown bear, snow leopard, maral, and large birds of prey listed in the Red Book of Kyrgyzstan. At present it is under the jurisdiction of the Directorate of the Biosphere Territory "Ysyk- Kol" and, along with other specially protected natural areas, needs measures to preserve flora, fauna, seed stock and protection from poachers. Partially and quite legally this function can be performed by various public organizations. Community Association "Ala-Too Bugu" is one of such organizations, created by local activists in 2021 to solve the tasks of ensuring the protection regime of the reserve, conducting on its territory monitoring of fauna and flora, introducing modern methods of grazing livestock, developing environmental, scientific and economic justification of activities.

Potential conservation benefits in saving biodiversity

Potential reduction of species extinction risk resulting from threat abatement actions

Absolute value (STAR)

0.1

0.1% of the total biodiversity conservation potential of Kyrgyzstan is covered by this project.

85.5

0% of Asia's biodiversity conservation potential is from Kyrgyzstan.

309,761.9

25.9% of global biodiversity conservation potential is from Asia.

The chart below represents the relative disaggregation of the selected contribution's total potential opportunity for reducing global species extinction risk through taking actions to abate different threats to species within its boundaries. The percentages refer to the amount of the total opportunity that could potentially be achieved through abating that particular threat.
