The lowlands of Savannakhet province support biodiversity rare elsewhere in Laos. The extensive riverine floodplains along the Xe Champone are recognized as Ramsar sites for their global importance, hold the largest known population of the Critically Endangered Siamese Crocodile, and are the home of several highly threatened species of turtle. Communities living in this biodiversity-rich wetland area are reliant on agriculture and fishing practices, yet these are increasingly unsustainable, leading to increased rates of land clearance and declines in fish and wildlife populations. The challenge here is to reverse this trend, by working with communities on fisheries management, sustainable agriculture, ecotourism, wetland management, and biodiversity conservation.

Potential conservation benefits in saving biodiversity

Potential reduction of species extinction risk resulting from threat abatement actions

Absolute value (STAR)

1.3

0% of the total biodiversity conservation potential of Lao People's Democratic Republic is covered by this project.

5,299.3

1.7% of Asia's biodiversity conservation potential is from Lao People's Democratic Republic.

309,761.9

25.9% of global biodiversity conservation potential is from Asia.

The chart below represents the relative disaggregation of the selected contribution's total potential opportunity for reducing global species extinction risk through taking actions to abate different threats to species within its boundaries. The percentages refer to the amount of the total opportunity that could potentially be achieved through abating that particular threat.
