The Pacific Tropics encompasses crucial ecosystems along the Humboldt Current. The Chilean tropical Pacific region is significant for its ecological value and remarkable biodiversity and productivity, making it a focal point for artisanal fishing. This entire northern Chilean coastline hosts important habitats, such as kelp forests, that support benthic communities, seabirds, and marine mammals, including the Humboldt penguin (Spheniscus humboldti), the South American sea lion (Otaria flavescens), and occasionally, the South American fur seal (Arctocephalus australis). Its beaches and coastal areas are home to some of the few feeding sites for the Eastern Pacific green turtle or black turtle (Chelonia mydas agassizii), and breeding grounds for the Peruvian tern (Sternula lorata), two endangered species.
