The Marine Forest Project

The Marine Forest creation project is intended to restore coastal ecosystems and increase carbon absorption sources by recovering the coasts from whitening and preventing further spread. This project will create an annual 0.16 square kilometer sea forest in the fishing area around Jeju Island, and manage the forest after its creation. From 2002 through 2021, 52 marine forests were built, measuring 3.38 square kilometers. New areas have been selected for a new marine forest. Artificial fish reefs will be manufactured and installed in the selected areas by taking into account the characteristics of water depth and adhesive substrate. In addition, seaweeds such as Ecklonia cava, or paddle weed, will be transplanted and artificial pockets will be installed to contain mature sporophytes and to induce spore abjection. After creation, they will be managed through creation management and post-management. The management activities are as follows: inspecting the facility by eliminating marine creatures that feed on seaweed and collecting waste scattered around and conducting supplementary planting of seaweed. After the creation of marine forests, the investigation of the marine environment, habitat examination and effect on adhesive density and growth pattern of the transplanted seaweed, etc. will be carried out.
