Reforestamos México is a Mexican civil society organization that works to ensure that forests remain a source of social, environmental, and economic well-being for present and future generations. Since its founding in 2002, Reforestamos has promoted inclusive forest governance, strengthened local capacities, and fostered multisectoral collaboration to scale up forest-based solutions. Reforestamos envisions forests as strategic allies in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals and the targets of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. Its work focuses on six key areas: conserving protected natural areas; restoring degraded lands; promoting sustainable forest management; advancing urban tree cover as a pillar of urban resilience; advocating for enabling conditions in public policy; and engaging the private sector to invest more effectively in ecosystem-based solutions that reduce environmental footprints. These solutions generate vital ecosystem services such as water regulation, carbon capture, biodiversity protection, and soil conservation. As a member of IUCN and FSC, Reforestamos contributes to global environmental agendas through national and regional initiatives such as the Mexican Alliance on Business and Biodiversity, the Mexican Alliance for Ecosystem Restoration, and the Youth Environmental Network. It develops geospatial tools and strategic information to support evidence-based public policies and territorial planning for forest action. Reforestamos has also led key efforts to strengthen civic space and environmental democracy, including the promotion of Motion 049 at the IUCN World Conservation Congress, calling for enhanced civic participation in environmental decision-making. It advocates for full implementation of the Escazú Agreement and actively works to foster transparency and public engagement in forest governance. Committed to building a more inclusive IUCN, Reforestamos co-developed the “ABCÑ” initiative in collaboration with the Mesoamerican and South American Regional Committees and the Spanish National Committee of IUCN. This Spanish-language platform is designed to strengthen dialogue and cooperation among IUCN members across Latin America and other Spanish-speaking regions. Reforestamos believes that sustainable development and climate resilience are only possible when forest ecosystems are governed through inclusive processes that value both scientific knowledge and the traditional, local wisdom of the communities who depend on and care for these landscapes — always with a shared sense of responsibility and long-term vision.
