Dahari was created in 2013 to support rural communities to restore the ecosystems of the Comoro Islands. Over the past 30 years the Comoros have suffered from one of the highest rates of deforestation in the world, and rank in the top ten countries most vulnerable to coral reef degradation. Dahari’s team of 60 implements three models across the islands of Anjouan and Grande Comore: a forest programme which signs conservation agreements with farmers to protect key areas for biodiversity and water provisioning; an agroforests programme that provides agricultural support to farmers planting over 50,000 trees per year in their fields; a marine programme focused on supporting fishers to implement a network of community-led no-take zones. Collaboration with the National Protected Areas Agency and the Environment and Fisheries Ministry seeks to take these approaches to scale.
